What Are the Best Bifold Door Configurations?

Published 14 March 2026

Bifold doors come in a range of panel configurations, and choosing the right one makes a big difference to how the doors look and function. Here's a practical guide to help you pick the best layout for your opening.

How Bifold Door Configurations Work

Bifold doors fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening. The configuration is described by the number of panels and the direction they fold. For example:

  • 3-0 = 3 panels, all folding to one side
  • 2-1 = 2 panels folding left, 1 panel folding right
  • 3-3 = 3 panels each side, opening from the centre

Most configurations can include a traffic door — a single panel that opens independently for everyday access without folding all the panels.

Configuration Guide

2 Panel — Best for Compact Openings

  • Max width: ~2,400mm
  • Ideal for: Balcony doors, small kitchen openings, utility rooms
  • Both panels fold to one side. Simple and compact.

3 Panel — The Most Popular Choice

  • Max width: ~3,600mm
  • Ideal for: Standard rear extensions, kitchen-diners
  • The most popular configuration by far. Three panels fold neatly to one side, and a traffic door is standard. This covers most typical extension openings in Leeds terrace houses and semis.

4 Panel — Wider Openings

  • Max width: ~4,800mm
  • Ideal for: Larger extensions, open-plan living
  • Available as 4-0 (all one side) or 2-2 (centre opening). Centre opening gives a dramatic "parting" effect and distributes the panel stack evenly.

5 Panel — Large Rear Elevations

  • Max width: ~6,000mm
  • Ideal for: Full-width rear extensions, detached properties
  • Usually configured as 5-0 or 3-2. At this width, a traffic door is particularly important for everyday use without opening the entire run.

6–7 Panel — Maximum Impact

  • Max width: ~7,000mm
  • Ideal for: Grand openings, entertaining spaces, barn conversions
  • Centre-opening configurations (3-3 or 4-3) create the most dramatic effect. These configurations are popular for large rural properties and barn conversions across West Yorkshire.

Traffic Doors — Don't Skip This

A traffic door is a single panel that opens like a conventional door, without the other panels folding. We include traffic door capability on all configurations and strongly recommend using it. In practice, you'll use the traffic door 95% of the time — nobody folds all 5 panels just to let the dog out.

Which Way Should They Fold?

The panels should fold toward the side where they'll be least obtrusive when stacked:

  • Away from the main view — Don't block your best garden view with stacked panels
  • Away from walkways — Don't stack panels where people walk along the outside of the house
  • Toward a wall — If one side of the opening is against a wall, fold toward it so the panels tuck away neatly

Our Recommendation

For most Leeds homes, a 3-panel configuration with a traffic door is the sweet spot — it covers the standard 2.4–3.6m extension opening, is the most cost-effective option, and looks great.
