One of the most common questions we're asked is: how wide can bifold doors actually go? Here's a clear answer based on what's practically achievable with standard aluminium systems.
The Short Answer
Standard aluminium bifold doors can span up to approximately 7 metres using a 7-panel configuration. Each individual panel can be up to roughly 1,000mm (1 metre) wide, though the optimum panel width for smooth operation and proportional appearance is 700–900mm.Maximum Widths by Panel Count
| Panels | Typical Max Width | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | ~2,400mm (2.4m) | Compact openings, balconies |
| 3 | ~3,600mm (3.6m) | Most popular — standard extensions |
| 4 | ~4,800mm (4.8m) | Larger extensions, open-plan living |
| 5 | ~6,000mm (6.0m) | Full-width rear elevations |
| 6 | ~6,600mm (6.6m) | Large openings, barn conversions |
| 7 | ~7,000mm (7.0m) | Maximum for most systems |
These are approximate maximums. The exact limit depends on the specific profile system, glass weight, and structural opening.
What Determines the Maximum Width?
Panel Weight
Each panel contains a large pane of double or triple glazed glass. As panels get wider, they get heavier — and at some point, the weight exceeds what the hinges, rollers, and track can handle smoothly. This is the primary limit on individual panel width.
Structural Opening
The wall opening itself needs a lintel or structural beam to support the load above. Wider openings need stronger (and often deeper) lintels. A structural engineer will specify this based on your specific property. For openings over 4 metres, a steel beam is almost always required.
Track Deflection
The bottom track must remain straight and level for the doors to operate smoothly. Very wide openings may need a reinforced threshold to prevent the track from flexing under load.
Wind Loading
Larger doors present a bigger surface area to wind. In exposed locations, this can affect the maximum practical size. The profile system's wind load rating determines what's achievable.
What If You Need Something Wider Than 7 Metres?
For openings wider than 7 metres, there are two common approaches:
- Sliding doors — lift & slide systems can span 10 metres or more as the panels slide rather than fold
- Combined systems — a run of bifold doors combined with a fixed panel or a separate sliding section
We supply both options and can advise on the best solution for very wide openings.
Our Recommendation
For most Leeds homes, a 3 to 5 panel configuration (spanning 3–6 metres) covers the vast majority of extension and renovation projects. This range offers the best balance of cost, aesthetics, and smooth operation.
